The Food and Drug Administration just announced a nationwide recall on enoki mushrooms. This is due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The Enoki King branded products affected, distributed to retailers across the U.S., were sold in 5.3-ounce plastic packaging. The packages recalled contain lot code 4877 on the front and a UPC of 860011505600 on the back.

The recall was initiated after the Maryland State Department of Health tested the product for Listeria bacteria, which resulted in positive results. While there are no illnesses connected to this recall, Listeria infection (aka listeriosis) can be especially harmful for those age 65 and over, young children, those who are pregnant and immunocompromised individuals. Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, headaches, stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Talk to your health care provider immediately if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms after eating these enoki mushrooms.

If you have the recalled mushrooms on hand, dispose of them or return to their place of purchase for a full refund. Be sure to wash your hands and any food or surfaces that may be contaminated after handling the product as Listeria bacteria can quickly spread.

For questions pertaining to this recall, contact the company at 718-290-6617, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.
