EatingWell's Editorial Guidelines Published on April 19, 2024 Photo: Eating Well / Madison Woiten Cooking healthy food is easy when you have the right tools, and no one knows this better than food influencer Emily Mariko. The TikTok sensation went viral in 2022 thanks to her beloved salmon bowl recipe, and in the years since, Mariko has continued to take our feeds by storm with genius recipes from cucumber salad to yogurt bowls. I’ve been following Mariko for years, and in that time, I’ve noticed the same red-handled knife appear in almost every video. If it’s good enough for the internet’s favorite foodie, I knew I had to try it too. Last week, I tracked down Mariko’s Amazon storefront to find the exact chef’s knife she uses, and it’s safe to say I’m never looking back. Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic Chef’s Knife Amazon $57 at Amazon In her videos, Emily has for years reached for Kyocera knives, most notably the Revolution Series chef’s knife, for chopping produce and more. Now that I’ve tried it out for myself, I completely understand why. Unlike other knives I’ve tried in the past, Kyocera blades are made from ceramic, not metal, providing a level of sharpness unlike anything I’d experienced before. This 5.5-inch knife is hand-sharpened and stays sharp for longer than metal knives, letting me slice through boneless proteins, produce, and more without dulling over time. In fact, one Amazon shopper says they’ve “never had to send the knife in for sharpening,” even after owning it for almost a year. And, according to the brand, ceramic blades cause less oxidation and preserve freshness for longer. The only downside is that the knives are delicate, so take extra caution when it does come time for sharpening. While it is more fragile than typical knives, this chef’s knife can last for years if properly cared for. In another review, a professional chef who has had their Kyocera knife for over a decade calls it “by far the sharpest, best tool in their kitchen.” According to the brand, the key to avoiding damage and promoting longevity is to always use a wooden cutting board and opt for metal knives when slicing frozen ingredients, melon and other hard foods. In addition to its sharpness, it’s lightweight and features a comfortable, ergonomic handle, so I can cook in ultimate comfort. Chopping up food with my old knives doubled as an arm workout, but this knife does all the work for me, easily sliding through fruits and vegetables without any force or sawing required.
