Coli Outbreak Linked to McDonald's—Here's What to Know Exposure to Listeria bacteria can cause foodborne illness known as listeriosis. Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. However, people that are pregnant, age 65 or older or immunocompromised may experience more severe symptoms like headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
